Today we are stoked to have the former Music Director of Envy and now turned NFT guru Maxwell Silver collaborate with us on MARK YOUR WALL #Connect. Read more about his interesting upbringing and his selection of music for the Spotify playlist inspired by Color palette #03!
Hi Max, tell us more about yourself!
Firstly I would like to give a big thanks to the Mark Your Wall team. I love the concept and I’m very happy to have been given this opportunity to take part in it and share my musical story.
I’ve decided to approach the questions in a more personal way as the color palette really relates to me on that level, rather than talking about the company and brands I work with.
My real name is Wassili Quist, born and raised in Amsterdam by my Dutch father and Greek mother. As my parents met through music it was always clear to me that it would play a major role in my life.
From DJ-ing at private birthday parties from the age of 11, for my childhood friends, to playing in top clubs all over the word, it has taken me all over the world, with a major step in 2007 when I moved to Shanghai for what was initially to be a 2 month DJ project, but ended up staying there for 4 years. I moved back to Amsterdam in 2011 in an attempt to change my career to a more 9-5 corporate job working 4,5 years for Nespresso. During that time my fingers slowly started itching and the urge to play music and accomplish bigger and better things in the music industry took over my mindset. Eventually the universe presented me with an opportunity in 2016, when one of my best friends, who’d I worked with in Shanghai, informed me of a new project in Vietnam, ENVY Club. I packed my bags, said my goodbyes, again, and left for Ho Chi Minh City. I booked a 1 month return ticket to check out what Ho Chi Minh, it’s people and culture were all about and here we are. 5 years later I am still happily and gratefully living in this great city and have a wonderful family together with my Vietnamese girlfriend and our little 1 year old son.
For You, how does Art Make the Invisible- Visible?
Coming from a musical background, I would say, music is the Invisible art and ignites all kinds of emotions in people that are Visible in their expressions. Whatever emotion that may be, it is amazing to see how people can be affected by something they can’t see, but only hear and feel.
How did Mark Your Wall Color Palette #03 influence this Spotify playlist?
As I mentioned earlier, the color palette really relates to me on a personal level as it symbolizes the best of the 2 cultures from my parents, my culture and my passion for music.
My mother is from Greece where the 2 main colors of the country are blue and white. My father is from the Netherlands where the national color is orange. Both countries are known for its water and between them the other colors can be explained by the blue skies, the clouds, the sand and the beaches and all the beautiful memories that come with it.
Basically what I did for this playlist is reflect back to all those memories. The favorite songs of my mother when she was the first female DJ in the country and she used to play the vinyl records at home and sing them out loud in our house. And my dad, who told me so many stories of his teen years in his 60’s band playing covers of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. I was so fortunate to have been raised with such musical diversity as my parents formed a Greek music group together that performed traditional “Rebetika” folk music and my little brother and I would always go with them and play and sleep backstage at their gigs. Those were some of my best memories and they all have contributed to the journey that has led me here today. The playlist is therefore a mix of many different genres and songs that I remember belong to those memories.
On a side note, I realize it is impossible to hand over a definite playlist as every song I add triggers new memories that are so significant that I have to add that related song as well… 😅
This playlist is turning into a life's journey and so, I will continuously be adding songs to the list until the memories run out. 😁
Hope you enjoy it.
Peace and Love Max! ✌️💛
