It has been a month since the unthinkable happened and the world was thrown into chaos. Our hearts go to the people of Ukraine and Russia who are collaterals in this madness and hope the war will end without any more casualties. One such Ukrainian who has been affected is an amazing up and coming DJ based in HCMC, 𝙎𝘼𝙄𝙉𝙏 𝙑𝘼𝙍𝘼. Today we present to you the music playlist she created inspired by 𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙆 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙒𝘼𝙇𝙇’s Color Palette #06 and her thoughts on the current situation.
Hello Vara, please tell us more about yourself.
I was born and raised in Kyiv, a great city and the capital of Ukraine, a country with an extremely rich texture of ethnic sounds. Thanks to my parents who are true music lovers I developed an early passion for various styles like jazz, bossanova, Italo disco, city pop, afro funk, and, of course, house and techno. My family moved to Asia when I was 13, bringing new discoveries, cultures, experiences and sounds. That’s why being still very young I have a broad soundscape in my head. I’m just carefully filtering tracks that speak to me somehow through my own taste buds trying to put together my own point of view on dance music.
How does Art help you get through times of uncertainty?
Since Russia invaded Ukraine, all of us are living in anxiety and fear for friends and families there. This brutal unprovoked act of war is an absolute crime against humanity. Watching news and seeing cities I remember from my childhood being destroyed by missiles makes me cry. I’m trying to find some relief in deep roots Ukrainian folk music and also in modern artists who raise the free spirit of my country, who stays strong against a much more powerful enemy, while defending rights and freedoms of our people.
Tell us how Mark Your Wall’s Color Palette #06 inspired the playlist that you’ve created.
This color palette goes from deep, centuries old melodies coming from the forest slopes of Carpathian Mountains through the sounds born between gently rolling hills and beautiful rivers to reach the brightest acts of urban Ukrainian electronic music.
